sometimes i think about how young our country is, how, really, we're the immature, selfish pre-teener among older and wiser countries that saw us at our infancy, fought our impudence, and reluctantly gave us our tantrum-won independence.
last week i learned that the pledge of allegiance wasn't mandatory in schools until the 1950's, when our government began to fear an uprising of red-sympathetic gradeschoolers and decided imposed ritualization of appreciation was the way to go.
also added at the same time:
1)the words "under God" in the pledge.
2)the now well known "right hand over the heart" salute, changed from an all too nazi-esque upraised arm.
why the history lesson, you ask? well, i could say that my 4th was so wild and raccous that i can't even remember the details of the day, that i was so befuddled in my drunken stupor that i couldn't figure out how to operate my camera, that i wound up lying coma-like in a post-yay-america hangover that attacked my tender head with the tenacity of mini van moms looking for beach parking.
but that would be a lie.
so here's a pretty picture of my house.
